BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — Black Forge LLC will debut RuggedGate, a patent-pending steel tailgate cap, at the 2026 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, November 3-6, at Booth 12010. Every late-model pickup carries a plastic cap across the top edge of the tailgate. It's a cosmetic part sitting in a structural spot. The retaining clips work loose over a few months of normal use, and the cap eventually tears off, usually under load in the middle of a job. Replacements on the market are either more plastic or aluminum diamond plate stuck down with adhesive tape. RuggedGate is the first steel tailgate cap that bolts to the truck's factory mount points. "I broke mine hauling firewood, then again on a construction side job, then again just using the truck for everyday work," said Caleb Jefferies, founder of Black Forge Trucks and a full-time firefighter. "After the third one, I stopped buying replacements. When I started asking around, every guy with a work truck had the same story and the same shrug — that's just what they do. Nobody was building the part that fixes it." RuggedGate installs over the existing cap, whether it's cracked, broken, or already gone. No drilling, no adhesive, no trip to a body shop. Eight pre-stamped holes land on the factory access-plate screw locations and the original screws hold it down, so install runs about two minutes. Mounted, it sits flush and looks like factory equipment. Black Forge builds, finishes and ships the part from Big Rapids, Mich., in 14-gauge American steel. It carries a lifetime structural warranty, and a lifetime rust warranty on the stainless version. RuggedGate fits all 2017–2022 Ford Super Duty models (F-250, F-350 and F-450, with or without the pull-out bed step). It ships September 1, 2026, at $399 MSRP.
