Edelbrock® VRS-4150® 850 CFM E85 Race & Performance Carburetor

Edelbrock introduces the VRS-4150 850 CFM E85, the latest race-ready yet street-friendly carburetor offering geared toward enthusiasts utilizing alcohol-based fuels, specifically E85. Like all VRS-4150 Race and Performance Carburetors, the 850 CFM E85 has amenities that appeal to racers, engine builders, carb tuners, and hot street enthusiasts looking to improve performance. These additional features make for easier tuning and excellent versatility for many applications.

The main difference between the VRS-4150 850 CFM E85 (PN 1308-E85) and the standard gas 850 CFM (PN 1308) is additional fuel delivery. Made to flow roughly 30% more fuel than gas-based carbs, it uses large fuel bowls and custom four-circuit billet metering blocks to match the needs of E85 (85% ethanol/15% gas) fuels. Dual 50cc accelerator pump circuits come standard with enough capacity to launch big engines, while annular boosters provide superior air-fuel mixing for exceptional performance under all conditions.

Like all VRS-4150 carburetors, the 3.75-inch-tall one-piece cast aluminum body fits all 4150 and 4500-style carb flange manifolds without requiring an adapter plate. A universal throttle arm with popular transmission kickdown take-off points, multiple vacuum hook-ups, and built-in provisions for a standard GM three-wire TPS make street installations a breeze. Four fuel circuits utilizing industry-standard screw-in air bleeds make track-day tuning quick and precise.

Edelbrock engineers designed the float bowls with ease of use and high g-load in mind. Not only are they 20% larger than standard bowls, but they also include convenient attributes such as borosilicate sight glasses on both sides, a drain plug, and nylon washer inserts to seal screw holes better. Inside is all about controlling the fuel, starting with the “mustache,” a sculpted baffle below the extra-large .130” needle and seat that minimizes fuel foaming by directing incoming fuel to the sides of the bowl. Meanwhile, internal ribbing around the perimeter (just below the sight glass) works in conjunction with chamfering on the bottom edges of the Nitrophyl float to keep fuel from shutting off the flow in hard cornering. The floats are notched so the jet extenders in the secondary bowl can keep the jets immersed in E85 under hard acceleration.

VRS series carburetors are highly tunable, with many features found only in high-end racing carburetors. The fully adjustable intermediate fuel circuit provides extra fuel just after the blade passes the transfer slot for excellent throttle response. Two auxiliary idle air screws allow users to change idle speed without moving the throttle blades away from their ideal position.

For greater fuel-ratio control at high RPM, the high-speed/main fuel circuit is split into two bleed circuits – one for the lower and one for the upper sections of the main well. Additionally, four air bleeds per venturi provide a quick way to fine-tune each fuel circuit. Lastly, the power valves on both primaries and secondaries support optimized jetting. The power valve will add fuel only when enrichment is necessary for ideal cruise and power mode AFRs, while the power valve protection circuit prevents diaphragm damage from backfires.
