For decades the Downs name has represented quality and commitment to excellence in the fiberglass hotrod community. There’s always been something extra special about the “Downs touch”, from the quality of each piece to every rake, chop, and flare. Each body is it’s own.
When Downs was sold to Legends Motors Worldwide in the early 2000’s promises were made to take the company and the name to the next level. Not only were these promises empty but it wasn’t long before the company was brought to ruin and the good name destroyed. The Downs family was eventually able to reacquire the company but it was only a brief time later, in 2008, that Downs founder Jimmy passed away. Overwhelmed with the daunting task of rebuilding a business with a severely marred reputation on his own, Jimmy’s son Jamie shelved the molds in order to focus on the military defense side of Downs Industries.
Barely a year ago, in 2013, the new owner Tom Borisch - a hot rod enthusiast with vast experience in the custom composites world - was able to strike a deal with Jamie to purchase the business. What is now Downs Custom Performance Automotive has relocated and opened its doors in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Not only are Borisch and his experienced, multi-talented team are not only devoted to the legacy of excellence that was established by Jimmy in 1980 but they have also managed to expand and bring on new products to the Downs line up. The Downs 1970 Cuda will be making its debut in November at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas and will be available for consumer purchase shortly after.
Though the battle of eradicating the damaged reputation is an uphill one, the team at Downs Custom Performance Automotive faces the challenge with an unwavering tenacity and optimism with one goal in mind: To renew customer confidence in the Downs product and relationship.
