Unraveling the Mystery of Structural Bonding Adhesives — RD19

This session will alleviate confusion surrounding structural adhesives, addressing questions surrounding where they should or should not be used, and which OEMs recommend their use; and confusion around “equivalents” and substitutions. Instructors will demonstrate test methods that will show why structural adhesives are different than panel bonding adhesives. We will use a weld-bonded UHSS Honda B-pillar repair procedure to demonstrate some of the complications and unique situations a technician will encounter during repairs. Objectives will include:

• A brief history of Adhesives in collision repair
o Where they began
o Gradual Acceptance
o How lack of standards creates concerns
o How litigation creates awareness of OEM recommendations

• OEM Procedures recommending Structural Adhesives Increases
o Discuss some OEM procedures
o Example manual procedures discussed
o Videos showing the OEM process for replacement of Honda 1500 MPa B pillar

• Where are these adhesives used?
o OEM call-outs
o Cautions about "equivalents"
o OEM proprietary adhesives
