Excessive under-the-hood heat generated by exhaust pipes and headers robs horsepower, puts electrical components at risk and reduces overall performance. DEI, the leading thermal specialist for the automotive aftermarket, now offers a quicker and easier way to ensure a cooler air charge for improved performance. Speed Sleeves cover and protect primary exhaust header pipes serving both as an insulator and radiant heat barrier for pipes up to 2-1/2” in diameter. Speed Sleeves offer a time saving alternative to completely wrapping headers from top to bottom, and can also be used for spot heat protection on any pipe or manifold.
Also sold as a kit, Speed Sleeves has everything needed for a quick and simple install including 8” wide exhaust wrap, locking fasteners and stainless steel locking ties. Available for purchase in two color options, tan and black, it is available for either a four or six cylinder engine (12’ of wrap) or eight cylinder (16’ of wrap).

The new ONYX™ Series Starter Shield from Design Engineering Inc. (DEI), provides reliable heat protection for starters under severe duty or extreme heat. Starters exposed to heat soak often malfunction or have problems starting reliably. DEI’s next generation ONYX Series Starter Shield provides the highest level of thermal protection to prevent starter malfunction due to heat soak.
The ONYX Series Starter Shield combines two technologically advanced textiles into a dual layer for maximum thermal control. The outer layer is made from heat treated glass fiber bonded with molten aluminum then formed into a tight weave for added strength and durability. The inner layer is made of a specially treated, high temperature resistant fabric (89% silica). Combined, these materials protect the starter up to 1350°F of direct heat.
DEI’s C7 Corvette Heat Shroud™ is made with a high-temp glass fiber fabric bonded to aluminized material that reflects 90% of radiant heat. The Z06 Corvette is noted for its oil cooler lines placed in close proximity to the catalytic converter capable of reaching 1200+ degrees Fahrenheit. Radiant heat from the converter can raise the oil temperature to the point of putting the C7 in limp mode and putting other components at risk of failure. This scenario is especially possible at the racetrack or even spirited street driving.
DEI now offers a simple, easy to install solution. The C7 Heat Shroud protects engine oil from overheating without the need to disconnect the oil cooler lines. Developed with a convenient hook and loop closure design, installation takes only minutes. Simply wrap the heat shroud around the oil cooler line and seal.
DEI’s new Heat Screen is made of Mylar laminated to a glass fiber matting backed with an aggressive pressure sensitive adhesive for easy peel and stick application with high cohesion strength.
Designed to protect against excessive direct or radiant heat, it is developed to withstand 1200°F direct heat, or up to 2000°F radiant. To apply, simply cut and trim to cover body panels, floor boards, gas tanks, fairings, and other areas requiring thermal protection. It can also be used as a low profile protection under carpeting to lessen floorboard heat. Measuring only .060 inches in thickness, this versatile, thin profile reflective material adheres quickly and easily to any surface, even or uneven, painted or unpainted.
Excessive heat can cause performance and factory fuel injectors and sensors to be at risk of vapor lock or heat soak; which can cause rough idling, slow starting or other potential serious engine problems. In addition, cooler fuel injectors perform more efficiently with a more consistent throttle response.
To reduce problems associated with vapor lock and heat soak, DEI has introduced heat reflective fuel injector and sensor covers that are now available in packs of two, four, six or eight. The covers efficiently reflect direct and radiant heat away from injectors and sensors. Constructed of high-temperature rated glass fiber material bonded to a heat reflective aluminized material, DEI’s Fuel Injector and Sensor Covers work well on most any engine configuration with stock or aftermarket injectors and sensors.
DEI’s Protect-A-Wire™ offers a cost effective way to protect expensive spark plug wire sets from burning, cracking or hardening. It is also an excellent choice for wire looms for a clean wiring installation. Excessive under hood heat can cause arching, engine misfire or damage. Protect-A-Wire is constructed of high temp resistant glass fiber material developed to handle 500°F direct heat or 1200°F radiant heat. Ideal for all electrical wiring, speedometer cable, or hose up to 10mm in diameter, Protect-A-Wire is resistant to hot oil and chemical spills, and adds protection against dirt and abrasion.
Now, DEI offers seven bulk spool options in colors; black, red and blue; all in 50’ lengths. Diameter sizes range from 3/16”, 5/16” and 1/2”, ideal for race teams, engine builders and race shops for a clean, professional look that works with any electrical wiring, hose or fuel line.
Constructed of an aluminized heat reflective material backed with a high temperature rated glass fiber insulation barrier, the new mini DEI Versa Shield™ protects starters and other components from failure due to heat soak. Capable of reflecting radiant heat up to 2000°F and direct heat up to 500°F, this innovative thermal product installs easily and can be trimmed to size.
Its convenient hook and loop closure design allows the shield to wrap around the starter and attach in minutes. Most starters will not require removal. Simply wrap the starter with the aluminized side out, trim length to fit and secure the edges by pressing the black loop material sewn into the material into the sewn in strip of black hook material.
Developed with a universal design to fit most mini sized starters (5.25” wide x 16.5” long) the shield is also ideal for multiple components where heat can affect performance—master cylinders, distributors, fuel pumps and more.

DEI’s Exhaust Wrap Kit provides everything you need to completely wrap a set of small block or V-6 headers in one package. The kit includes two rolls of 2 inch by 50 ft. wrap designed to protect up to 1500° F, one can of HT Silicone Coating that coats, protects and preserves the wrap after installation, and eight 8 inch and four 14 inch 304 Stainless Steel Locking Ties to ensure long-lasting durability and hold. A free Locking Tie Tool is included to lock the ties tight and works with any ¼” drive. DEI’s stitched-in wrap guide line protects against overlapping for a professional and tight fit.

The newly added Titanium Protect-A-Sleeve with LR Technology provides thermal protection for wires, lines and cables from the damaging effect of direct and radiant heat; up to 1800°F direct heat, and 2500°F radiant. It is available at AutoZone in the ½” ID x 4 ft. length (part #010065).
DEI’s ONYX Series™ Turbo Shield is now available for many popular OEM and aftermarket T-4 sized turbos including Garrett and Mitsubishi. While first introduced for the GT22 and GT25 turbocharger, DEI is proud to build on the popularity of its ONYX Series line to offer this same premium product for the T4.
