Clemson to showcase latest in automotive engineering at SEMA 2012
GREENVILLE — The Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) will showcase the third-generation concept vehicle of its Deep Orange program next week at the 2012 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show.
Students and faculty will unveil Deep Orange 3, the latest prototype vehicle designed and engineered by Clemson automotive engineering students, Oct. 30-Nov. 2 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
This year’s Deep Orange vehicle was sponsored by Mazda North American Operations and developed in collaboration with numerous automotive companies, including several SEMA members.
CU-ICAR and SEMA will co-host a news conference at 10 a.m. Oct. 31 in the Vehicle Technology Center Grand Lobby, Booth 20301, with Derek Jenkins, design director for Mazda North American Operations.
Deep Orange 3 features a unique hybrid powertrain that automatically chooses front-, rear- or all-wheel-drive; a load-bearing structure based on innovative sheet-folding technology patented by Industrial Origami; and groundbreaking 3+3 seating configuration in sports car architecture.
As part of Clemson's graduate automotive engineering program, students are required to create and manufacture a new vehicle prototype. The program provides students with experience in vehicle design, development, prototyping and production planning. Each year, a prototype vehicle is developed with a new market focus and technical objectives.
The project showcases advanced technology and provides students an opportunity to work directly with automotive industry partners to innovate and develop ideas.
